Four storytelling structures for a clearer video

Choose explanation, investigation, transformation, or demonstration according to the job the video needs to do for its viewer.

The useful principle

Structure is the order in which understanding changes. An explanation moves from question to model; an investigation moves from uncertainty to evidence; a transformation compares before and after; a demonstration makes a result visible through action.

The best structure is not the most dramatic one. It is the one that makes the subject easiest to follow and gives each beat a job. Mixing modes is useful only when the hand-off between them is clear.

Try it in three steps

  1. Name the viewer’s main question.
  2. Choose the mode that answers it most directly.
  3. Give every beat a change in knowledge or expectation.
