How to use open loops and curiosity gaps without clickbait
Create a specific unanswered question, keep progress visible, and close the loop with evidence so curiosity strengthens rather than weakens trust.
The useful principle
An open loop is a question the viewer expects the video to resolve. It works best when the missing information matters and the route toward the answer is visible. Vague promises create confusion; specific questions create anticipation.
Close important loops before opening too many new ones. A useful sequence is question, attempt, complication, and answer. The answer can then reveal the next decision, giving the video momentum without withholding the entire payoff.
Try it in three steps
- Ask a question with a concrete answer.
- Show visible progress toward the answer.
- Deliver the proof before introducing the next loop.
